The main patio area
The owners of this home had spent a lot of time and effort getting the inside of their house just right. A modern extension had been added at the back but the view out into the garden was less than inspiring. The clients felt that the garden was a bind whilst they were getting nothing back from it and simply didnt want to go outside and use it. They also had drainage issues which we needed to address. They wanted to keep a good amount of lawn for their young son to play in but add interest to the rest of the garden. Three seating areas were created - one just outside the new extension for morning coffees; the existing patio was revamped; a third area was created round the front where a swing seat could go and create an area to relax and read a book. New drainage channels were set into the garden and more gravel was introduced to lessen the impact of excess water in the garden.

Before: a lawn and not much else After: new path, patio, utility area and planting

" The standard of work was high and attention to detail superb.  We felt that Michael and Jill were committed to our garden and passionate about their work. "
A curving path (Heritage Yorkstone with Spey chippings edged with Marshalls Tegula blocks) created a journey around the back garden and linked the various areas. The main patio was cleaned up and a linear pergola with climbers was built around the edge.  The existing lawn was reshaped as were the borders which were made larger in proportion to the garden. A utility area for drying and a shed was created around the side of the house and screened with some trellis.  Planting consisted mostly of shrubs such as hebes, cotinus, viburnum and choisya making the garden much more low maintenance. Scent was added with plants such as Phildelphus Virginal and Sarcococca confusa.  Pretty flowers are abundant with plants such as hydrangea, camellia, syringa and buddleja.
A morning patio was created using the same Heritage slabs and chippings but edged in metal to give the sharp, round shape. Dense planting around the patio will soon create a "secret garden" and a place to escape and read a book in peace.

The new veg area utilises an area previoulsy unused The client wanted an area they could use for growing veg without taking up too much space. We designed an area in the corner of the garden which sloped down  and was never previously used. By adding terraces and some raised beds a pretty and functional area was created. A box hedge was planted around the perimeter to finish it off.
