An
Informal Back Garden in Dunblane
The
Brief:
The
clients had recently had a conservatory built and they wanted to have a
beautiful garden to admire from there. Excavations
from the build of the conservatory had been dumped into the garden so
this needed
addressed. The rest of the sloping back garden was pretty uninspiring
with a lot of lawn and very narrow borders tucked underneath the
existing hedge. The clients still wanted some borders to look after
but didn't want to be a slave to them. They wanted a main seating area
to entertain family, as well as a smaller morning patio. The various
level issues needed to be addressed.
The
Design:
Firstly,
the garden was levelled considerably, providing an easier
space to stroll around. A deck around the conservatory was chosen to
overcome the level issues directly outside the conservatory. The
walkway leads into the decked morning patio with beautiful ballistrade.
A curving path, constructed
in gravel which beautifully complements the brickwork of the
conservatory leads, to the main patio built in Heritage Yorkstone. The
entrance to the main patio is framed with two standard photinias and
there
is a row of containers at the back of the patio creating a visual
boundary to
the utility area beyond. A bespoke raised trough to the side of the
patio,
planted with lavender, provides great smells and additional seating. A
matching raised bed created a modern, easy to tend veg patch.
New borders were created using curving lines,
leading
you around the garden. Planting was colour themed with beds of pinks,
purples
and whites. Feature shrubs such as sambucus nigra and cotinus "Royal
Purple" were incorporated into the design. Winter interest was
introduced
through planting such as fatsia japonica, buxus sempervirens,
hellebores and
viburnum.
The lawn was replaced and given a new,
curvy shape, creating interest and a journey around the garden.
An area was created
where the clients will
place a sculpture of their choice, providing a glimpse of something
interesting
in the distance, from their viewing spot in the conservatory.
Lighting
around the deck, patio and the
sculpture give the garden a real wow factor at night as well as
allowing the
space to be used well into the evening. |
