The new relaxing garden
This modern home had the sort of garden we see time and time again - a bit of lawn and absolutely no personality. The clients wanted to keep some lawn but not as much and wanted a patio area so they could sit outside and enjoy their new space. The clients had an interest in plants but didn't want to be a slave to the garden so we were required to come up with a planting plan which had year round interest but was reasonably low maintenance.

Before: a damaged lawn, an unsightly fence and no redeeming features. After: new path, patio, fencing and planting

" If I had to pick a favourite area it would be the courtyard garden which has transformed a little used space into a little piece of heaven."
The  existing lawn was in a pretty bad condition due to some recent flooding and had no real shape to it. It was completely lifted and a new lawn laid in a pleasant curving shape, giving the clients enough green to satisfy them whilst allowing plenty space for more interesting features. The new pebble path which leads to a new seating area is edged in Marshalls Tegula Cinder. This was also the edging to the main patio which was constructed in Marshalls Coachhouse Pennant.

The client wanted to retain some interesting planting and had a good knowledge of the herbaceous planting they liked. A mixture of herbaceous plants, grasses, shrubs and small trees were designed together to create a reasonably low maintenance garden. All beds were finished in bark to reduce the requirement to weed.

The new courtyard area with veg beds made of chunky sleepers The client was keen to create an area to grow veg and store bins. Chunky timbers were used to create the veg beds which also double up as extra seating. A bin store was built to hide the unsightly wheely bins and some trellis was added to the walls and as a screen through to the back garden for some added privacy. What started as a utility area turned into a "courtyard" and is now one of the client's favourite parts of the garden!
