The
Brief:
The clients wanted their uninspiring back garden brought to life. A
seating area was required but not to the extent of the enormous
existing deck that dominated the garden. They wanted some area for
planting but not too much for them to maintain. A small area for veg
and herbs as well as a BBQ area was on the wish list along with strong
colours. As well as being an area that the clients could enjoy and
relax in, the garden also had to be dog-friendly for the
clients'
lively spaniel.
The
Design:
The first area to tackle
was the huge deck. Due to budget restrictions,
it was necessary to keep part of this. Reshaped and stained to match
the fencing and new timber features, this created a much more
appropriately sized seating area in the sunniest area of the garden.
The path leading from from the patio doors to the house was lined with
contemporary containers which reduce in size as you travel down the
steps. These are planted with phormium, creating a modern,
artchitectural feel.
Entering
from the side of the house, new paving
was chosen in a modern granite effect. This was complemented with
Ledmore marble gravel. The lawn was reshaped and edged with timber to
tie in with the chunky sleepers used to create the raised borders.
Similar timber was used
to create the bespoke troughs on the deck,
which are planted with bamboo creating a living balustrade. A
linear
pergola edging the
front of the lawn provides height in the new garden, drawing the eye up
and on to the beautiful view of the Ochils and creating a journey into
the garden.
The
planting is a mix of hot colours balanced with calming
whites and evergreens. The soft planting of tulips and "kojo-no-mei" is
contrasted with architectural plants such as euphorbia, crocosmia
and grasses. Some tumbler tomatoes and courgettes provide vegetables
as part of the mixed bed complemented with herb troughs mounted on the
fence.
Lighting has been
installed along the pathway, in the deck and under feature planting
allowed the clients to enjoy the garden well into the evening.
