Our clients had just
moved down from Orkney and were looking to have their back garden
quickly transformed. They had discovered Vialii when viewing a house in
a nearby village whose garden was designed by ourselves and they had
decided they wanted to use us for their brand new garden. What a lovely
compliment! The garden they inherited had absolutely no redeeming
features. A fence which was about to fall down, some tatty old
astroturf, a random brick "feature" and some red chips left the garden
completely uninspiring. Luckily for us, the clients had brought an
eclectic mix of lovely artefacts and pots that they wanted incorporated
into the garden. From rustic bird baths and mill-stones to old urns and
stone troughs, there was a veritable treasure trove that we could
include in the design. The main brief was to create a rustic, natural
feel to the garden and to be low maintenance.

| "It was a
great boon for us to have the design and building work done by the same people.
They listened to our wishes and ideas carefully and incorporated them into the
design. We are delighted
with the standard of workmanship and the final result." |
The
first issue needing tackled was the fence. It was literally about to
fall down so was immediately replaced with a new vertically slatted
fence, creating a lovely new backdrop to the garden. Next, our clients
needed somewhere to sit. A beautiful natural sandstone was selected for
the main patio area and was edged in vintage style red bricks. Stepping
stones lead to a secondary seating area which was created from timber
with an arbour above, allowing some shade and seclusion.
For ease of maintenance, as well as creating a lovely feature, timber
sleeper beds were built. This time however, the sleepers were used
vertically which not only created a different look, it allowed the beds
to be built in curves.
To match the edging to the patio, brick circles were created and
surrounded by a natural washed gravel. The circles were then used as a
feature for some of the clients' wonderful curios - a bird bath and an
old stone pot. |

The planting will be
completed by the clients. Lots of lovely foliage planting will soon
surround the variety of pots and urns hiding in the raised beds and
plans are already afoot for lots of climbers to scramble over the
arbour and create a beautifully secluded spot. A new shed and some
trellis panels completed the transformation into a rustic courtyard
garden.
